Top 8 of 08 (with video evidence)

I am severely disappointed that I am severely disappointed by the Pitchfork top pick.  I don't know what it says about me that I care what a somewhat pretentious, but generally good website thinks about music.  Regardless, rather than complain, I thought it would make more sense to actually list my top 8 of 08.

8.  Tobacco - Fucked Up Friends (I have a weird soft spot for stuff like this.  Can't really explain it.  I just like it.)

7.  TVOTR - Dear Science (A very good record.  Not quite as good as Cookie Mountain, but really solid all the way through)

6.  Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple / Beck - Modern Guilt ("The Danger Mouse Sound" is underappreciated.)

5.  Portishead - Third (Realistically, this would have been higher if I didn't absolutely hate the single)

4.  Wale - The Mixtape About Nothing (Much much more than a gimmick)

3.  Girl Talk - Feed The Animals (The funnest record.  Also the record, according to my iTunes, that I've listened to most this year.  That counts for something.)

2.  Kanye West - 808's and Heartbreaks (An incredibly compelling record/piece of theater.)

1.  Hercules & Love Affair - s/t (Just the best record)

Show 14: A Giant Failure

The internet is a magical place.  It is also a confusing one.  I thought the internet feed was broken, so I stopped the show midway.  It was not actually broken.  Please accept a thousand apologies, as well as

1. a picture of a puppy:

2. a link to a live show (featuring incredible sound quality) by Low at this year's All Tomorrow's Parties.  It's the jam.

3. speaking of the Jam, here's a video of the Jam covering "move on up", a fantastic curtis mayfield song.

i hope these apologies/gifts begin to make up for my own deep, dark personal failure.

Show 004: What it Means to be a Cory/Truth

so last night, with Dip out of town and nerding-out at a chem convention on the east coast, i recruited a guest DJ. lil' dipper, aka nic, aka my little brother, made his illustrious debut on KSDT -- or KSTD, as he was wont to mistakenly call it (freudian slip much?). my theme was "what it means to be a cory" (our last name) and his was "truth."
here is the playlist:

What It Means to Be a Cory
Chip's Choice
1. kool and the gang - celebration
2. chicago - saturday in the park
3. gene autry - mexicali rose
4. natalie cole - orange colored sky
5. wham! - wake me up before you go-go
6. cream - sunshine of your love
7. stevie wonder - i just called to say i love you

Lil' Dippers Digs
1. diana krall - just the way you are
2. adele - hometown glory
3. peggy lee and benny goodman - blues in the night
4. coldplay - don't panic
5. bea arthur (YES THAT BEA ARTHUR) - where do you start?

Truth
Chip's Choice
1. darker my love - two ways out
2. deerhunter (covering jay reatard) - oh, it's such a shame
3. jason molina - love leaves its abuser
4. foals - big big love (fig. 2)
5. gil mantera's party dream - buffalo tears
6. my morning jacket - knot comes loose

Lil' Dipper's Digs
1. regina spektor - fidelity
2. selena - como la flor
3. celia cruz - la vida es un carnaval
4. fiona apple - fast as you can
5. janet jackson - empty
6. audra mcdonald - how glory goes
7. natasha bedingfield - unwritten

i doubt KSDT has seen so many songs from musicals, like ever. way to go, Lil' Dipper.
our mom also decided to call us like six different times. she called during "i just called to say i love you" -- appropriate because when nic and i were little and staying over at friends' houses or when our parents were away on vacation, she would call us or we would call her and sing this song to each other. okay, we still do it. anyway, mom called and started singing along -- especially funny because there is a delay on the broadcast. i put my cell phone up to the mic, but i'm not sure her voice carried. hmmm...i should probably check that out. oh, the possibilities!

our listenership peaked at 8. all family and friends, we're quite sure. though my buddy ryan did download the show later and learn about what it means to be a cory while playing some video game. excellent.

Dip-the-Elder returns next week and it's sure to be a great show as usual. though i will certainly miss Lil' Dipper's banter and strongly encouraging him (ie, making thinly-veiled threats) to nix some of his song selections (*cough*johnmayer*cough*).

in case you missed this, you can check it out here!

love,
Chip

Hello

Remember in grade school when your teacher would say to use the 4w's when writing? I do. Let's try it now, OK?!?!

What: This is the official web log of the radio program "30 Minutes or Less". Each week, we will each present two mixtapes of length less than 30 minutes (hence the show title) for two different topics.

Who: The show is hosted by Erin Cory and Aaron Leconte, or, as we are known on the radio's intergooglenets, Chip Dipson and Dip Dobson, respectively.

When: Stream: Tuesdays, 8-10pm PST; Download: Whenever's clever.

How: You can stream the show through the intergooglenets or Itunes or whathaveyou; just start by clicking here. Alternatively, we will be posting shows for download on this very web log.

Why: Because I, specifically, have better taste in music than you do.
